Fashion Week has thrown up some dazzling productions on my feed this week.
Gaurav Gupta's softly commanding Astral Projection. At the end of the video he appears with his wife. The whole collection arose through their extreme suffering of severe burns after they were caught in a fire. I love that she wears a gauzy dress and henna (or perhaps real?) tattoos which makes her scars beautiful.
Spectacle and illusion
I do enjoy the spectacle for its own sake. Also, I instantly want to deconstruct it. I want to see the pins folding the drape at just the right angle; the musicians conjuring emotion behind a screen; and the layering and application of the powdered masks.
The fashion world is a great illusion and it is ephemeral. The moment of perfect effect can never last.
What is real is the question I am most interested in.
Gupta Interview
And what personality wishes to construct this great show?
Gupta:
"I think I'm just a proponent for change period... I'm a gay guy who lives with a straight woman who's my life partner since 25 years 30 years and so I don't follow any rules anywhere in my life... Couture is Art and I am just an artist who is trying to be free."
